At the time of writing this post we’ve got an official White Christmas here in the UK, something that’s never a given thanks to the climate we’ve got but who knows how that will be affected as the climate changes and we potentially lose the effects of the Gulf Stream across the nation. Regardless of that, when there’s snow in the UK then one place that often misses out is our home city of Portsmouth; chalk cliffs to the north, the Isle of Wight to the south, and sitting on its own little island with the micro-climate effects that generates means I’ve got many, many memories of people posting photos of snow just ten minutes away by car while we’ve been blessed with chilly slush at best and often no more than rain. However, back in very early 2010 we did get some snow and with it being such a novel experience for us I made sure to take some photos. Below, you’ll find pictures from three locations; the first two close to home and the final one where I was working at the time.

First up is our garden with the monstrous lilac bush and already-rotting-by-this-time decking looking quite nice covered in a layer of iced water.

A day after that snow covered our garden we took a walk down to nearby Kingston Cemetery where clear blue skies, a low wintry sun, and clean snow over the graveyard made for some pretty views.

The final pictures are from where I was working at the time: a set of buildings in the middle of the Chilgrove countryside in West Sussex, around twenty minutes away by car in good conditions but at this time with the slippery, snowed-in roads probably closer to twice that.
