Ugliness is in the eye of the beholder, so while I’ve titled this short post Ugly Southampton Architecture it would be more accurate to have added For Some People to the end. But I didn’t, and you’re just going to have to get over that omission.

These photos were taken in 2011. I don’t remember why we were in Southampton on the day in question but I had my camera with me and decided for some reason to take some photos of the façades of several modernist architecture buildings. I was clearly in a pattern mood, looking for those repetitive shapes and colours that interested me even if, to a critical eye, there was nothing actually of interest in the faded, dirty, unloved walls and windows that caught my eye.

I particularly liked the shaped concrete forms and smooth-cornered windows of the building below on Portland Terrace and reworked one of the pictures which you can see here: Photo: Portland Terrace Brutalist Windows.
