During and after World War II my grandad was stationed in Singapore. While he clearly survived the war, he died before I was old enough to show any interest in his experiences and it’s not something he ever talked about with my dad and my uncles. However, my dad does have memories of spending a few years in Singapore as a child, and this would have been in the late 1940s and early 1950s. I don’t have much else to go on, but I do have these photos that have managed to find their way to me, and which I scanned many years ago.

When my grandparents, my dad, and his brothers all returned to England they did so by ship, sailing from Singapore, through the Suez Canal, then the Mediterranean. I’ve no evidence to support it, but I’d like to think that the final photo in this set of Singapore scans might be my nanny and grandad on a formal night on the ship; it has that sort of vibe to it.
