There’s not a lot that needs saying about this picture. These are the cloisters n Chichester Cathedral, as you can clearly tell if you’ve got eyeballs. Lovely gothic arches look into the lawned area between this arcade and the main cathedral building. On hot days this is a lovely place to come, seek shade, and cool down a little bit. This picture was taken in early 2011 when I used to work in Chichester and would get away from the desk at lunchtime – as everyone should – and go for a walk in the city.
The processing for this photo is simply my old, tried-and-tested, pseudo-HDR exposure stacking technique. Take the original photo, make it black and white, save it. Then adjust that photo’s exposure both up and down, tweaking the shadows and highlights to avoid clipping, and save those. Then let Photomatix work its magic with a tone-mapped combination of the stacked pictures and play around with the settings until there’s something that looks good. It’s a process that takes, at most, three minutes, once you’ve got the hang of it, and the results are sometimes lovely. To me.
