On our last day in Iceland staying in Hafnarfjörður at the Hotel Viking we were due to be picked up just after midday which didn’t leave us enough time to venture in Reykjavík so we made do with another wander around the town. Chancing upon a map of the area we realised that there was a park we hadn’t spotted on our previous walk around so we headed for it. The park was called Hellisgerði, reasonably rarely for Iceland containing trees as well as a lot of lava rock, and rumoured to be home to elves. Icelandic people do like their elves. We didn’t see any elves or other mythical creatures in Hellisgerði (I know, we’re as shocked as you) but we did happen upon a fair number of artistic sculptures dotted around the pleasant landscape.
There was also a church in the park although we never did find out what its name was or the religion to which it was bound (although Lutheran would be my guess).
Thank you for this beautifully illustrated report on the sculpture park! I was invited to participate to the third sculpture festival in Hafnarfjördur and created the giant telephone “Liaisons Dangereuses “.
I have been many times to Iceland since but it has been a long time now since I went there and was very happy to see your beautiful pictures of the park which reminded me of this wonderful experience.
I’m pleased you were able to find your artwork here. It was a lovely surprise to us to discover the park and your piece was our favourite there.
