Our first cruise ever had been on Diamond Princess and in 2018, nearly ten years later, we found ourselves on her sister ship, the only other Grand-class vessel to be built in Japan, Sapphire Princess. In fact, but for a quirk of fate and a fire late in construction, Sapphire and Diamond would have had each other’s names. On this cruise we spent a week sailing out from Southampton, hitting northern Spain and western France, with one of those French ports of call, La Rochelle, only being disclosed once we were aboard.
