Living in Portsmouth we’re not short of castles to visit in the vicinity and one of the most impressive ones within thirty minutes’ drive is Arundel Castle in West Sussex, home to the Duke of Norfolk. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve visited the place over the years, either with my family or with my wife and hers, so it was something of a surprise back in 2014 when I discovered that the castle had gardens; in all the many years of visiting Arundel Castle I’d only ever gone into the main structure and ignored the path that led beyond the entrance. It turned out that not only had Arundel Castle been hiding gardens from me on all my visits, they were – much like the castle itself – spectacular examples of gardens too, as the following photographs taken on what was a wonderfully bright and warm day will show.
